We finally review a non-Gameloft game
Here at QuicklyBored, we have a certain affinity for two types of games: A) anything with some decent T n A and B) simplistic puzzle games autistic nomad orphans could master. The question here is whether we should credit games that are less original than Milly Vanilly.
Jewel Quest is to Bejeweled what Christina is to Britney, what Shyne is to Biggy, what Simple Plan is to Green Day. For those who arent familiar with Bejeweled, its a puzzle game where you must eliminate 2-D jewels, by maneuvering matching jewels in rows of three or more to clear them from the screen. Upon clearing the jewels, they are randomly replaced. The goal is to obtain a certain score within the allotted time. Jewel Quest deviates slightly from this format. The only difference is that whichever square you clear a jewel in will turn red; the goal in Jewel Quest is to turn all the squares red. This may seem like a small difference but it fundamentally changes the gameplay. The variation adds a more strategic aspect to this simple puzzle game by making where you make your connection more important then simply just making connections.
Now, to be fair, Jewel Quest isnt the only guilty culprit in jacking Bejeweleds format. Zookeeper simply replaces the jewels with cutesy-pie Japanese-style cartoon animals. What makes Jewel Quest stand out is the fact that they actually improved on the game after they completely ripped it off. What scares me about this game isnt the fact that I-Play steal ideas like Bill Gates on a greedy day, but the dependent state Jewel Quest leaves you in. I can only compare the sheer desperate need I feel for this game to my nicotine and Internet porn addictions. My heart seriously skips a beat when I think of any of the three. The severity of these problems only seems to be increasing; I think Tron is planning an intervention.
Jewel Quest may not be as original as Katamari Damacy, but it shares the same mind-numbingly simple gameplay that will have you itching for a quick fix, the likes of which only Courtney Love and Tyrone Biggums truly understand.
