Interview with Tim Harrison
Parts One and Two of a three part interview with Tim Harrison, Head of Games for Vodafone is now up at MobileIndustry.biz. UK-based Vodafone (parent company of US-based Verizon Wireless) is one of the world’s largest mobile telecommunications companies, so it pays to listen to what their games czar has to say.
Harrison is insightful and well-spoken, but doesn’t really break new ground on the problems that face mobile gaming. One of the highlights of the interview is when he reveals that, duh, gaming is not the primary consideration of people with mobile phones:
“A mobile customer buying their new phone, they might buy it because they can play cool games on it - they’re more likely to buy it because it looks great, because it comes with a great tariff, oh, and they can play cool games, watch videos and put their MP3s on there. Because it’s a convergent platform, there are a whole host of different reasons why people buy it… you’re not appealing to a customer who has gone out and bought a PS2 or an XBOX because they love games.”
But let’s face it: the real reason you should read this is because Tim Harrison is a powerful man. Seriously, he’s the Head of Games for one of the biggest mobile telecommunications companies in the world. He’s so loaded that he probably has a crack team of ninjas scouring your city right now to make sure you’re ‘interested’ in becoming part of the Vodafone ‘family’. If you don’t read that interview, you’re gonna wake up tomorrow next to a horse’s head with a Motorola RAZR V3 shoved up your hoohah. Kinda makes you wonder about that ‘tap tap tap’ sound coming from your rooftop, doesn’t it?
