Pong on crack
Any North American male born after 1980 can more or less safely say that they were raised by video games. Growing up alongside the video game industry, one can’t help but feel that what they ended up teaching us wasn’t that healthy: monkeys think they’re donkeys and will try to crush you with barrels; plumbers ride lizards that like to eat turtles; frogs have a suicidal urge to be slaughtered by speeding vehicles on freeways. It’s a wonder our society hasn’t produced more Jeffrey Dahmer/animal-hating psychopaths. But I digress.
While video games have come a long way from their pixilated past, some of us long to play in the good old days — when New Wave was new and video games were played on a single quarter. Block Breaker Deluxe is basically Pong on crack, only your goal isn’t to knock a ball back and forth. You must instead use the ball — along with an explosive array of weapons and power-ups — to destroy many, many blocks. I’m sure we all know this style of game, but what separates Block Breaker Deluxe from its cheaper cousins is the attention to detail and general mayhem Gameloft is willing to pump into this futuristic throw back.
There are reasons why this game will make you scramble for your cell phone like it’s a steaming hot crack pipe. Each stage contains hidden gifts you can exchange for a piece of a password. These passwords are used to unlock secret locations on the city map. While this sounds a little involved for a mobile game, what it really means is that there’s a shitload to do. Beyond the regular levels, you can unlock vs. games, a giftshop to buy powerups and new levels, a random level generator, and some other stuff I’ll let you discover on your own. Throw in some intense boss battles and you have the next stage in the evolution of breaking stuff.
In an industry polluted with big budget movie tie-ins and overly complex controls, it’s refreshing to see such a simple, yet well done game. It may seem like this genre is more played out then a James Brown sample, but when it comes down to it, I’m looking for a game that’s fast, simple and more addictive than crack and Redbull. Block Breaker Deluxe will keep you itching for a quick hit any minute you can squeeze it in — truly the game you play when you’re QuicklyBored.
